Shaun Rathman Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist

Our warmest congratulations to senior Shaun Rathman, who has been named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist—an honor achieved by fewer than 1% of U.S. high school seniors each year. High-achieving students earn this recognition by scoring among the top 1% of students in their state on the PSAT/NMSQT taken during their junior year. The National Merit Scholarship Program, established in 1955, is one of the most prestigious academic recognition programs for high school students in the nation, with about 1.5 million students entering the competition annually.
“Shaun’s achievement is a reflection of his incredible work ethic, intellectual curiosity and dedication to learning,” said Principal Tom Campbell. “He’s a shining example of what it means to be an Exeter Eagle—committed, compassionate and driven to succeed both in and out of the classroom.”
To advance to Finalist standing, Shaun will have the opportunity to write an essay, take the SAT or ACT to confirm his PSAT/NMSQT performance, receive an endorsement from Principal Campbell, and continue to meet the academic and conduct requirements of the selection committee. About 15,000 Semifinalists nationwide will advance to Finalist status, and approximately 7,500 of those will go on to receive National Merit Scholarships, which will be announced in the early summer of 2026.
Shaun plans to attend college to study astrophysics and has been active in a number of academic extracurricular activities throughout high school, including Model UN, where he competed in the Academic World Quest in Washington, D.C.; Science Olympiad; Quiz Bowl; and Student Council. Since 9th grade, he has also served as the school’s mascot, appearing at countless athletic and spirit events across the district. He is also a proud member of the golf team.
