Exeter Students Get Inside Look at Police Work Through State Troopers Academy

Twelve SHS students spent their fall afternoons stepping into the shoes of a State Trooper as they participated in the Pennsylvania State Troopers Citizens' Police Academy—an eight-week immersive after-school experience offered at Exeter for the very first time this year.
Organized through the high school's Counseling Office by Mrs. Mary Matetich-Patton, the Academy introduced students to a wide range of law-enforcement roles and responsibilities. Starting in October through yesterday's graduation, participants explored real police procedures through hands-on demonstrations, expert presentations and behind-the-scenes learning opportunities.
Throughout the program, students gained exposure to evidence collection, crash investigation, forensics, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, polygraph techniques and K-9 handling. They also learned from specialists in the Liquor Control Enforcement Bureau, Fire Marshall’s Office, Forensic Services Unit and more. But perhaps the most memorable experience was a full-day visit to the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, where students met members of the Aviation, Mounted, SERT, HDES and Emergency & Special Operations units. They also became the first high school group ever permitted to observe a Cadet Uniform Inspection--and even shared a meal in the Academy’s Mess Hall.
While some students enrolled because they are considering careers in law enforcement, others joined simply to learn more. According to Mrs. Matetich-Patton, the Academy helped the students clarify their future plans: “The experience helped them confirm their decisions--whether to pursue a career in law enforcement or to decide it was not the right path for them.”
Our thanks to PA State Police Troopers Ethan Brownback and Rush Stehlin and Captain Christopher Winesburg for their time and expertise working with our students and helping give them an unforgettable experience!
